The Mamluk Project – October 7, 2020 Update

If there is one truth that is indisputably universal, at least as far as we can understand, it is that time waits on no one. As I am sure many of you out there are dealing with wherever in the world you are, the world continues to shift as the year closes and summer comes to an end. We hope that those of you in countries that are experiencing a second wave of Covid-19 continue to remain healthy, safe, and are following the guidance of your local medical experts.

As for us on the project team, we are all doing our best to cope with rising numbers and changes to our work and in some cases home environments. Unfortunately during this last month of transition there has not been as much movement on the project as we had hoped. All of the supplemental projects we are working on are still in progress, though bogged down.

Current Status

The sample booklet is still in progress. Currently the member of the project team working on the final edits is unable to continue in the short term, and so the files will be transferred to another team member who will complete it for distribution. In lieu of the completed first round sample booklet we have elected to release another page with training exercises.

The catalogue of techniques is still in the accumulation phase, as we are trying to ensure that we have a complete list from what has been translated and are able to execute them all with sufficient confidence that they are accurate.

We are also working on a timeline of the development of the mamluk kit from their foundation under the Abbasids up until their dissolution in the Napoleonic era. A release date for this portion of the project has not been finalized as of yet, but we will keep you abreast of our development.

In terms of translated text, due to personal reasons the translator is taking a short hiatus from the project but will be returning to it soon. In the meantime we will continue our research and review of what has been translated into English. He is still on the project and will come back to it as soon as he is able.

What Happens Next?

We continue to work on getting the sample booklet complete and ready for distribution. We continue to work on the catalogue of techniques. We continue to work on the timeline of Mamluk kit.

As we learn more we will continue to share our results.

We want to thank you again for your patience and your support. We will continue to work on this project and share with you what we have learned until it is complete. If you have any questions at all, please reach out to any member of the HAMAA Council or Mamluk Project team, and we will be happy to answer.

Stay safe, stay healthy.
